Choose Stan Smith

Pick the Stan Smith if you want the slimmest, most minimal shape, a synthetic upper that's quick to wipe clean in winter, and a shoe you can find at almost any Canadian sneaker retailer.

Choose Club C 85 Vintage

Pick the Club C 85 if you want real leather that softens as you wear it, a die-cut EVA midsole and padded sockliner, and a slightly fuller vintage tennis look.

Verdict

For most Canadians, the Stan Smith is the easier everyday shoe: it's slim, the standard synthetic upper resists creasing and wipes clean after slush, and it's stocked almost everywhere. The Club C 85 is the better pick if you want real leather and a softer, more cushioned build, and you don't mind conditioning it through salt season. Both are mainstream-priced tennis classics, so the choice comes down to material and silhouette rather than quality. Our Lab will add fit, crease and salt results for both as testing finishes.

What’s the difference between the Stan Smith and Club C 85?

Both are low white tennis shoes, but they’re built differently. The standard Stan Smith has a slim profile and a synthetic upper. The Club C 85 has a soft leather upper, a die-cut EVA midsole and a padded sockliner, in a slightly fuller vintage shape. Price and availability in Canada are similar.

Our comparison is based on construction, materials, price and availability in Canada; hands-on Lab results are being added as each pair finishes testing. Prices for both are shown above, in CAD, with the retailer and month we checked.

How do the materials and build compare?

The biggest difference is the upper. The standard Stan Smith uses a synthetic upper, so it isn’t leather. The Club C 85 uses soft leather, which Reebok has used on the Club C since the 1980s. Both sit on rubber outsoles; the Club C adds a die-cut EVA midsole.

Which looks better, and with what?

The Stan Smith is the cleaner, more minimal shoe, so it suits chinos, slim jeans, dresses and casual tailoring. The Club C 85 has a softer, slightly rounder, more vintage look that suits straight jeans, shorts and relaxed outfits. Neither is out of place with everyday clothes; the Stan Smith simply dresses up more easily.

Both have long tennis histories. The Stan Smith started in 1965 as the adidas Robert Haillet, named for the French player, and later took the name of American champion Stan Smith. The Club C arrived in 1985 as the Club Champion, part of the era of crisp white leather court shoes. If heritage matters to you, both have it.

How do they fit and feel?

We haven’t measured fit yet, so here’s what the construction suggests. The Club C 85 is built for more cushioning, with an EVA midsole and padded sockliner under soft leather that gives as it breaks in. The Stan Smith is flatter and firmer, and its synthetic upper stays stiffer for longer. Try both if you can.

Practical advice for buying online in Canada:

  • Measure your foot in centimetres and compare it with each brand’s chart.
  • Check whether the listing uses men’s, women’s or unisex sizing.
  • Buy where returns are easy. adidas Canada takes back unworn pairs within 30 days of receipt for most online orders.

Our Lab fit data, including weight per size and toe-box width, will be added as testing finishes.

Which handles a Canadian winter better?

The Stan Smith, by a small margin. Its synthetic upper doesn’t absorb salty water and wipes clean with a damp cloth, and it doesn’t need conditioning. The Club C’s leather also wipes clean, but road salt dries leather out, so you’ll need to condition it after salty days. Neither is waterproof, and both are low-cut.

For either shoe, wipe off salt the same day, from the top down toward the sole, and let them dry at room temperature with paper inside. For deep slush or ice, wear boots. See our salt stain guide and winter white sneakers guide.

Both shoes are on our master list of the best white sneakers. If you’re also weighing a chunkier option, read Air Force 1 vs Stan Smith.

Questions people ask

Is the Stan Smith or Club C more comfortable?

On paper, the Club C 85 is built for more cushioning: Reebok lists a die-cut EVA midsole and a padded foam sockliner under a soft leather upper. The Stan Smith is a flatter, firmer tennis shoe. Comfort also depends on fit, so try both if you can. Our Lab fit data will be added as testing finishes.

Is the Stan Smith leather?

Not the standard white and green version. Its upper is synthetic, not leather. Earlier Stan Smiths had leather uppers. The Club C 85 has a soft leather upper. If real leather matters to you, read the materials line on the product page before buying either shoe.

Which is better for winter, Stan Smith or Club C?

The Stan Smith is easier in salt season, because its synthetic upper doesn't absorb salty water and wipes clean with a damp cloth. The Club C's leather also wipes clean, but salt dries leather out, so you'll need to condition it. Neither is waterproof, and both let slush in over a low collar.
