Choose Air Force 1 '07

Pick the Air Force 1 '07 if you want a leather upper, Nike Air cushioning, a thicker sole for slushy sidewalks, and a bolder shape that suits jeans and streetwear.

Choose Stan Smith

Pick the Stan Smith if you want a slim, minimal shape that works with tailoring and dresses, and a synthetic upper that wipes clean quickly after salty days.

Verdict

These two look similar in photos but wear very differently. The Air Force 1 '07 is a chunky leather basketball shoe with Nike Air cushioning, a padded collar and a thick rubber sole that lifts you off wet pavement. The Stan Smith is a slim, flat tennis shoe with a synthetic upper on the standard version. If you want one white sneaker for everything from chinos to dresses, the Stan Smith is the safer choice. If you live in jeans and want more cushioning and presence, the Air Force 1 is the better buy. Lab results for both will be added as testing finishes.

What’s the difference between the Air Force 1 and Stan Smith?

The Air Force 1 ’07 is a chunky leather basketball shoe with Nike Air cushioning, a padded collar and a thick rubber sole. The Stan Smith is a slim, flat tennis shoe, and the standard white and green version has a synthetic upper. They’re both white, low and iconic, but they suit different outfits and different feet.

Our comparison is based on construction, materials, price and availability in Canada; hands-on Lab results are being added as each pair finishes testing. The current CAD price of each, with the retailer and the month we checked, is shown above.

How do the materials and build compare?

The Air Force 1 ’07 has a leather upper with a perforated toe box, a foam midsole with Nike Air cushioning, and a rubber outsole with pivot circles from its basketball roots. The standard Stan Smith has a synthetic upper and a flatter rubber sole. The Air Force 1 is the bigger, more cushioned shoe.

Which goes with more outfits?

The Stan Smith goes with more. Its slim, low shape works with chinos, slim jeans, dresses, shorts and casual suits. The Air Force 1’s bulk balances straight and relaxed jeans, cargo pants and streetwear, but it can look heavy with tailoring, slim trousers or a light dress. If you want one pair for everything, choose the Stan Smith.

How do they fit and feel?

We haven’t measured fit yet, so here’s what the construction suggests. The Air Force 1 has more cushioning and a padded collar, but it’s the bulkier shoe. The Stan Smith is slimmer, flatter and firmer underfoot. Check whether each listing uses men’s or women’s sizing, because both brands sell separate size runs.

Our Lab fit data, including weight per size and toe-box width, will be added as testing finishes.

Which is better in a Canadian winter?

It’s close. The Air Force 1’s thick rubber sole keeps the upper higher above wet pavement, which helps in light slush, but its leather needs conditioning after salt. The Stan Smith’s synthetic upper wipes clean more easily and doesn’t dry out. Neither is waterproof or insulated, and both are low-cut, so slush can get in.

Whichever you pick, wipe off salt the same day and let the shoes dry at room temperature with paper inside. On icy days, wear boots. Our winter white sneakers guide and salt stain guide have the details.

Both shoes are on our master list. If you’re choosing between tennis classics, read Stan Smith vs Club C 85.

Questions people ask

Is the Air Force 1 or Stan Smith more comfortable?

On construction alone, the Air Force 1 '07 has more cushioning: Nike lists Nike Air cushioning, a foam midsole and a padded collar. The Stan Smith is a flatter, firmer tennis shoe. The Air Force 1 is also the bulkier shoe. Our Lab fit and weight data, including grams per size, will be added as testing finishes.

Do Air Force 1s crease more than Stan Smiths?

Expect visible creasing across the toe on any leather sneaker, including the Air Force 1, because leather folds where your foot bends. The standard Stan Smith's synthetic upper is stiffer and tends to resist creasing for longer. Shoe trees and the right size help. Our Lab will log creasing at 50, 100 and 200 km of walking.

Are Air Force 1s good for winter?

They're one of the more practical white sneakers for cold, dry days and light slush, because the thick rubber sole keeps the leather upper higher above wet pavement. They aren't waterproof or insulated, and salt dries leather, so wipe them the same day and condition them. Wear boots on icy days or in deep slush.
