What counts as a platform sneaker?
A platform sneaker has a sole that’s much thicker than the standard version of the shoe, usually stacked fairly evenly from heel to toe, so your whole foot sits higher without the forward tilt of a heel. Chunky sneakers like the Air Force 1 or New Balance 530 also add height, but they read as sporty rather than as platforms.
There are three broad types:
| Type | What it looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| True platform | A classic upper on an extra-thick, stacked sole | Converse Chuck Taylor Lift |
| Chunky court shoe | Thick rubber sole on a basketball or tennis shape | Nike Air Force 1 ’07 |
| Chunky runner | Layered, cushioned running-style sole | New Balance 530 |
If you want the most height and an unmistakably fashion-forward look, a true platform is the choice. If you want a little lift and a shoe that also works with everyday outfits, a chunky court shoe or runner does more jobs.
How we chose these white platform sneakers
Our picks are based on construction, materials, price and availability in Canada; hands-on Lab results are being added as each pair finishes testing. To be clear: the Chuck Taylor Lift is the only true platform in our launch set. The other two picks add height through thick soles, which is what many people mean when they search for platforms.
We kept the list short rather than pad it with shoes we can’t stand behind. Every pick is sold by Canadian retailers in CAD, in sizes that cover most people, and is easy to return if the fit is wrong.
We’ll add more platform sneakers as they come through the Lab. For each one, we’ll publish sole height, weight per size, and how the upper holds up to salt and a month of wear. Until then, the Lift is the simplest way to get a white platform from a brand with wide Canadian distribution.
If you want a classic low shoe instead, see our master list or our women’s list.
Are platform sneakers comfortable to walk in?
They can be, if they fit well and you give yourself time to adjust. An even platform keeps your foot level, unlike a heel, but a thick sole is heavier and stiffer than a thin one, and your foot sits farther from the ground. Expect stairs and curbs to feel different for the first few wears.
What helps:
- Cushioning. Converse lists EVA foam cushioning in the Lift. A foam layer makes a tall sole feel softer underfoot than rubber alone.
- A snug heel. Lace platforms firmly so your heel doesn’t lift with each step. Heel slip is more noticeable when the sole is thick.
- Short first wears. Wear them around the house or on a short errand before a full day out.
- Easy returns. Try them on stairs at home, on a clean floor, while they’re still returnable.
If you have balance concerns or ongoing foot pain, a lower, chunky court shoe like the Air Force 1 is the more cautious way to add height. A chiropodist or podiatrist can advise on what suits your feet.
How should white platform sneakers fit?
Platform sneakers should fit like the standard version of the same shoe, snug at the heel with a little room at the toes. For the Chuck Taylor Lift, Converse Canada says the style runs large and suggests a half size down. Check whether the listing shows men’s or women’s sizes, because Converse sizes many styles as unisex men’s.
Sizing notes for each pick:
- Converse Chuck Taylor Lift. Runs large; order a half size down. Converse lists many styles in unisex men’s sizes, with the women’s equivalent two sizes up (a men’s 5 is a women’s 7). The toe box tapers, so wide feet may find it tight.
- Nike Air Force 1 ’07. Comes in men’s and women’s sizing at Nike Canada; check which one the listing uses.
- New Balance 530. Check whether the listing shows men’s, women’s or unisex sizing, and read the size chart.
Measure your foot in centimetres and compare it to the brand’s chart. Our Lab fit data, including weight per size and toe-box width, will be added as testing finishes.
How do you style white platform sneakers?
Platforms balance longer and wider shapes. They work best with midi and maxi dresses, wide-leg trousers, and straight jeans cropped at the ankle, where the extra sole keeps the hem off the ground and evens out the proportions. With skinny jeans or short shorts, a big platform can look heavy at the bottom.
| Outfit | Works with a platform? | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Maxi dress | Yes | The platform keeps the hem off wet pavement |
| Midi dress or skirt | Yes | Show a little ankle |
| Wide-leg trousers | Yes | Hem so it just grazes the top of the shoe |
| Straight jeans | Yes | Crop or cuff at the ankle |
| Skinny jeans, short shorts | Sometimes | Try a chunky runner instead |

Can you wear white platform sneakers in a Canadian winter?
Only on dry days. A tall sole keeps the upper farther from puddles and curb-side slush, which helps in spring and fall. But the Lift’s upper is canvas, which soaks through in slush and picks up salt marks. Save canvas platforms for dry pavement, and wear boots when the sidewalks are salted.
If they do get salty, brush off dry salt first, then clean the canvas by hand with mild soap and a soft brush; Converse doesn’t recommend the washing machine for Chucks. The rubber sidewall of a platform shows grime clearly. A damp melamine sponge lifts scuffs from rubber, but it works like very fine sandpaper, so keep it off the canvas. See our salt stain guide and winter guide.
What do white platform sneakers cost in Canada?
Canvas platforms like the Chuck Taylor Lift are among the less expensive white sneakers, while chunky leather and running-derived pairs cost more. The card for each pick shows its current CAD price and where we found it. As with any sneaker, the biggest savings come from timing and from retailers’ free-shipping thresholds.

Questions people ask
Do Converse platform sneakers run big?
Yes. Converse Canada says the Chuck Taylor All Star Lift runs large and suggests ordering a half size down. Chucks are also sized as unisex men's sizes on many listings, and the women's equivalent is two sizes up, so a men's 5 is a women's 7. Check which scale the size picker shows before you order.
How much height does a platform sneaker add?
It depends on the model, and many brands don't publish the sole height. Converse describes the Lift's sole as an elevated platform but doesn't list a measurement on its Canadian product page. Our Lab will measure sole height and weight for each pair as testing finishes, and we'll add the numbers here.
Are platform sneakers comfortable?
They can be, if the fit is right. An even platform keeps your foot level rather than tilting it forward like a heel, but a thick sole is heavier and stiffer than a thin one, and it takes some getting used to on stairs. Try them on at home on a clean floor, and keep the receipt.
What do you wear with white platform sneakers?
Platforms balance longer and wider shapes: midi and maxi dresses, wide-leg trousers, and straight jeans cropped at the ankle. With skinny jeans or shorts, a platform can look heavy at the bottom. Keep the rest of the outfit simple so the shoe isn't competing with too much.
