First look

The Tree Runner NZ is the current version of Allbirds' Tree Runner, launched in July 2025; "NZ" nods to the brand's New Zealand roots. Allbirds Canada had only leftover sizes of the original Tree Runner in October 2026, so this is the one to buy. It has a Tree Knit upper of eucalyptus-derived TENCEL Lyocell and recycled polyester, a SweetFoam midsole made from sugarcane-based EVA and a memory-foam insole Allbirds calls the Featherbed. Allbirds lists 8.9 oz (about 252 g) for a men's 9 and a 9.8 mm heel-to-toe drop. Despite the "tree" name it is not vegan: the lining and sockliner are wool blends.

Allbirds Canada, run by Montréal distributor In-Sport Fashions, lists it at CA$150 but had it at CA$75 on 24 October 2026 in a 50%-off sitewide sale. At that discount it is final sale, and one pair falls under the CA$99 free-shipping threshold. The whitest pair is the women's Blizzard (Blizzard Sole), white from upper to sole. Men can only get Natural White in Canada, which looks creamier in Allbirds' photos and was down to three sizes. Amazon.ca's listings came from third-party or cross-border sellers at about CA$120 to CA$229. The wool alternative, the women's Wool Runner NZ in Natural White, was also CA$75.

This is a spring-to-fall shoe: the breathable knit lets in slush and salt water, Allbirds makes no water-resistance claim for it, and its waterproof Wool Runner NZ isn't sold in white. A white knit shows dirt and needs a wash rather than a wipe, but Allbirds approves machine washing on a gentle cold cycle, with the insoles and laces washed by hand. Our picks are based on construction, materials, price and availability in Canada; hands-on Lab results are being added as each pair finishes testing.

Pros and cons

What's good

  • Machine washable, per Allbirds: insoles and laces out, gentle cold cycle, air dry
  • CA$75 at Allbirds Canada in October 2026, half its CA$150 regular price
  • Light: 8.9 oz (about 252 g) for a men's 9, per Allbirds
  • Tree-fibre knit upper, sugarcane-based foam midsole and recycled polyester laces

Watch out for

  • Sale pairs at 50% off are final sale, and one pair is under the CA$99 free-shipping threshold
  • The bright white Blizzard is women's only in Canada; the men's Natural White is creamier and low on sizes
  • Knit upper is not for slush, salt or rain
  • Not vegan: wool-blend lining and sockliner
  • One medium width only

This pair is scheduled for our salt and slush test, a 30-day whiteness reading and fit measurements. Results will appear here, with our own photos, once testing finishes. How the Lab works.
